The new film by Syllas Tzoumerkas – his first following 2010’s ‘Homeland’ – will premiere at the 67th Locarno Film Festival, where it will also be competing.
The creative partnership of director-screenwriter Syllas Tzoumerkas and producer Maria Drandaki once again garners international recognition. After the participation of ‘Homeland’ at the 2010 Venice Film Festival, it has just been announced that Tzoumerka’s new film ‘A Blast’, will be competing at the 67th Locarno Film Festival, which will take place August 6-16.
Filmed in Athens, Hamburg and Pieria, the film is a co-production of Greece, Germany and the Netherlands, with support of the Greek and Dutch Film Centers, the Film Centers of Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia and the Franco-German channel ZDF/ARTE.
Aggeliki Papoulia stars as Maria. Maria is running on a highway. Behind her there are flames and a bag full of money; before her, an endless road. Only yesterday she was a tender mother and a beloved wife and daughter. But today she has revolted. She is determined to sweep away everything she ever loved. Violent and sincere, courageous like its heroine, ‘A Blast’ follows her on her attempt to win back control of her life. Alternating between black comedy and drama, a hidden tenderness constantly punctures harsh reality, leading Maria onto a path towards atonement, in a Greek story more contemporary and relevant than ever.
“In the feverish years following the collapse of the Greek economy” Syllas Tzoumerkas explains, “A Blast talks about what it means for somebody to be refuted, and to take action against this. The film’s heroine Maria begins her adult life with the best intentions. Ten years later, everywhere she looks, things appear broken. Unwilling to come to terms with her lost dignity, lack of care and her defeated love for life, Maria fights back. She takes on her self, her past and loved ones. She also takes on her country and people’s perception of her sex, in a wild struggle for her inner truth and truth around her.”
